Our Purpose

Good Shepherd's purpose is "to make Word and Sacrament available to the greatest number of people as possible." That purpose drives our ministry.

History

Good Shepherd was begun in 1953 by a group of hearty Lutherans living in Norwood that wanted to establish a new church far away from all the city traffic! That vision led to the creation of what is now the area's largest Lutheran church located near the busiest intersection in Cincinnati! The almost 1400 current members continue to benefit from the vision of the founding members who set out in faith without knowing where the path would lead.

The congregation has long been known for its radical generosity, using up to 30% of its financial resources for outreach to the community, nation and world. Numerous outreach ministries, such a transitional housing program, a strong partnership with The Eastside Coalition of Habitat for Humanity, giving aid to scores of area residents in need of help with food, housing or medicine, have been the hallmark of the congregation since its inception.

Good Shepherd's strong lay and professional leadership has paved the way in initiating many new ministries that strive to bring the hope and love of Christ to the community. In 2008, for example, the congregation took over leadership for the Lutheran Campus Ministry at the Universithy of Cincinnati. Following an intensive, year long search, a new Director of Campus & Young Adult Ministry will join the staff July 1, 2009 to drive that ministry forward.

With the advent of the ministry at the University of Cincinnati, Good Shepherd is now a multi-site congregation. But we are not stopping there. Work is now underway to establish a third site in the Uptown area of Cincinnati in order to fulfill a vision of being one church at three sites. In other words, our future is following in the footsteps of those who started the church in 1953 by being willing to step out in faith in order to grow the Kingdom of God.

MembershipMinimize

We are a young congregation with the median age of 25 (for the 1100 members for whom we have birthdates on record), yet there are significant numbers of people in every age category. Slightly over 30% of the congregation is below the age of 18. About 37% of members are young adults in the 22-35 age range, with about 30% of those being single adults. About 16% of the congregation  are empty nesters (ages 45-65) and 13% are retired folks age 65 and over.

National and Synodical Affiliation Minimize

Good Shepherd is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The ELCA has about 4,800,000 members spread across the country. It came about in 1988 as the result of the consolidation of three former Lutheran church bodies: The Lutheran Church in America; The American Lutheran Church; and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. The ELCA headquarters is located in Chicago, Illinois. Its Presiding Bishop is the Rev. Mark Hansen.

The ELCA is divided into 65 districts called "synods." Good Shepherd is located in the Southern Ohio Synod, which is under the leadership of Synodical Bishop, the Rev. Callon Holloway. The synod office is located in Columbus. Ohio.

The Southern Ohio Synod is divided into six Conferences. Good Shepherd resides in the Cincinnati Conference, which consists of 26 individual congregations.
