Daily Devotions

Welcome to Good Shepherd’s Daily Devotions Page!

In the church year the season of Epiphany falls between the seasons of Christmas and Lent.  It is a time when we focus on how God’s hope is revealed in Jesus.  In this season we read the stories of the Baptism and Transfiguration of Jesus and the calling of the Disciples.  Each story reveals a bit about who Jesus is, and what his life means for us and our call to be disciples.

Our Devotions for the season of Epiphany have been written by members of the Good Shepherd staff.  May they enlighten and inspire you and light your path to a deeper walk with God.

Psalm 104

O Lord, what a variety of things you have made!
In wisdom you have made them all.
The earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the ocean, vast and wide,
teeming with life of every kind,
    both large and small.
26 See the ships sailing along,
    and Leviathan,[
c] which you made to play in the sea.

Over the last 6 months, as a family, we’ve really used the current situation to explore and experience the beauty of God in nature around us. As we have two very energetic boys, staying in the house is not always the best option. It’s extremely important for us to get the boys out to burn off their infinite supply of energy.  If we stay cooped up, things tend to get a little crazy in our house. We’ve really used the time to enjoy nature as a family and explore new parks and outdoor activities that we might not normally do. It always makes me smile to see how wonderous the world is to the boys as they experience and see new things that as an adult, we usually take for granted.

For example, the other week, our boys were playing near a creek, admiring the fossils, tadpoles and of course, just throwing rocks into the water. Just today, we were on another trail and saw a praying mantis walking across the trail. I swear it turned its head and looked at us! I really believe this has made us come closer to appreciate the awe of the world that God has created around us. I try to experience the beauty and enjoy it through my boys’ eyes as things seem to be more vibrant and exciting to a 3 or 6-year-old. So the next time you’re out, try not to take the splendor around you for granted. God has created a wonderful world, and we must not forget that.

Ed, through your devotional, we could all see the beauty of the world through the eyes of your young boys. Thank you for that gift!
