Daily Devotion

by Jen Jarman

Psalm 141:1-2
1 I call upon you, O Lord; come quickly to me;
   give ear to my voice when I call to you.
2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
   and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.

Are there prayers that you recite from memory/by heart? …. Who taught you to pray? Do you pray with anyone regularly?

These are the some of the reflection questions that The Flock youth group contemplated on our first evening at Tikkun Farm for a local mission trip experience known as PUSH (Prayer, Unity, Service and Humility) Week. After gathering over a meal and learning about the history and mission of the farm from Pastor Mary Laymon (Ex. Director of Tikkun Farm), she provided us a personal tour of the farm. We visited the chicken coop, the alpaca pen, the Bhutanese garden, viewed the Orchard and walked through the metal frame of their new greenhouse. Before starting the tour, Pastor Mary invited each member of our group to be on the lookout for a “sit spot”, a place that each individual would return to each day of PUSH Week and just notice the space they were sitting in – what did they see, what did they hear, what did they feel or smell?

This is the spot where each of us also engaged in a practice of Daily Devotions that delved deeper into each of the daily themes of PUSH Week. On that first evening together, our devotion focused on the theme of prayer. Prayer is about a living relationship with God. While God wants to hear what is on our hearts, God also desires much more than this for us. He wants us to know Him. When we pray, we gain a deeper understanding of who God is and how the Holy Spirit is at work in the world.

As I worked my way through the Daily Devotion on prayer in my new sit spot and reflected on the mission of Tikkun Farm, I wrote the following prayer using the A.C.T.S. method (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication):

Gracious God, you created perfect symmetry in this universe and you entrusted us to care for it. I confess that I put my own selfish needs first before the needs of the whole community. Thank you for forgiving me when I do not consider others first and for always quietly nudging me to do better. I ask you to help each of us at PUSH Week strive to make community a priority in our own lives. Amen.

Prayer is always a two-way conversation with God. Find a sit spot for today. Close your eyes, breath slow, take a few minutes to listen for God. Then respond. Keep the conversation going. You might be surprised how clear you hear God speaking to you. Pastor Mary at Tikkun Farm certainly has been and the current ministry of the farm is a direct reflection of Pastor Mary’s open heart listening for and responding to God’s guidance over these last six years. It has been through prayer, that Pastor Mary has discerned how Tikkun Farm can be a place of healing and a living example of restoration for the world. So, what does God what you to hear today and how will you respond to His guidance?

Jeremiah 29:11-13
11For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 12Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. 13When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart,
