Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

Sounds From On High

Where do we find God?  We find Him everywhere, but our sense of hearing adds to the assurance of his love and presence among us.

“Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live.”  Isaiah 55:3

The Sounds of Worship.

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:20

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.”  Psalm 100:1-2

Participation in congregational singing has always been inspiring and comforting to me.  The effect is especially powerful with my favorite hymns.  Singing “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”,  “How Great Thou Art”, and “Shall We Gather at the River”, among others, are especially meaningful to me.  As we enter Advent, we also look forward to singing the many beautiful Christmas carols that commemorate His nativity.

The Sounds of Nature.   “By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation; they sing among the branches. Psalm 104:12

One of the most startling and beautiful sounds I have ever heard came from a bird. On a chilly September camping trip in Kentucky, just before sunrise, “WHIPP-or-WILL ... WHIPP-or-WILL .. WHIPP-or-WILL ....”  echoed just outside a nearby cave, which amplified the call….a wakeup call without equal. God has given us the gift of nature.

The Sounds of little children.

“…Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of God.”  Luke 18:16

Our 2 year -old grandson was in the gym with his older brother and father.  He imitated them by proudly lifting a 3-pound dumbbell.  Then he progressed to an 8-pound weight, which might as well have been bolted to the floor. “STUCK!” was his assessment.  As we hid our smiles at his refusal to believe he wasn’t strong enough to lift it, we thanked God for the amazing gift of children.

A Prayer:  “Redeeming God, we look for signs of your kingdom around us:  peace, beauty, encouragement, restoration.  Help us to see, believe, and share the good news of your presence and movement in our lives.  Amen    Moravian Daily Texts 2021
