Sunday School Sneak PeakMinimize

The book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there is a time for every season and soon a new season of Sunday School will be upon us. New bible stories to learn, new friends to make and a whole year of faith experiences to help students learn about God’s love for them.

Preschool and Kindergarten students will start the year off learning about how “God Made the World” and then move on to “Noah Builds a Big Boat” from the book of Genesis. This year, 2 & 3-Year Olds will be combined together in one class in order to make room for a Pre-K class and of course we hope to have the Little Lambs program back again this year to share music and stories with our littlest learners.

Rotation students in grades 1-3 will hear the great Old Testament stories again – Creation, Noah’s Ark, Abraham & Sarah, Joseph, the Exodus stories, King David, Ruth and Isaiah. Mission month will fall during the month of February and we will participate in the Pennies for Peace Project to help build schools in Afghanistan.

Our 4th-6th grade Tween students will study a variety of topics this year, including “The Dig: Bible Overview”, “All Stars: The Church”, “Power Tools: Christian Beliefs” and “Anchors Away: Sharing Faith”. Tweens will continue to meet in large and small groups and 6th graders will participate in the “Intro to Luther” class at the end of their 6th grade year to help prepare them for entrance into the Confirmation program.

Confirmation students will also be studying the Old Testament this year while participating in 3 retreats, monthly workshops and various service projects. Confirmation students will be assisting in the rotation section at the end of the Sunday School year.

Senior High students will discern how their faith applies to their daily lives through a diverse array of topics, including “School Issues”, “Fast Food, Hunger & Faith”, the Lord’s Prayer and a New Testament Bible Study.

Please make sure to register your student. Forms can be found on the GSLC website or on the Educational Bulletin Board in the lobby and mark your calendar now for Rally Day – September 12th at 9:30am.

We eagerly look forward to growing in faith with you and your student(s) in the coming year!

2009-2010 Year in ReviewMinimize

Sunday, May 23rd marked the end of the 2009-2010 Sunday School year. This date was also the same date as the festival of Pentecost, so students ages 2 – 6th grade celebrated the day by hosting a birthday party for the Church. Students actively participated in the telling of the Pentecost story, made tongues of fire birthday party hats and iced cupcakes with red frosting. This celebration not only marks an important date in the church year, but celebrates a year of faith learning for the students of Good Shepherd.

The Preschool and Kindergarten students spent the Easter season learning about Jesus’ resurrection and how Jesus’ friends show love to others from the book of Acts. One such story that the little ones learned about was how Peter healed the lame man outside of the temple. THANK YOU again to all of our Little Lambs leaders this year – RON & KRISTINA ENMAN, KATHY PETERSON, VICKI SCHAPP and MARY NAYLOR. Our youngest students eagerly look forward to your visits each week!

Rotation students finished their year of “Living Our Faith” by studying the Bible – how the bible came to be, how it is structured and how to look up verses. A special “THANK YOU” goes out to CATHY WILCH for leading the weekly Assembly program for the Rotation classes. Cathy brought much energy and creativity, including puppets and music, to this weekly student gathering.

Our Tween students spent the month of May learning about salvation, such as the story of Zacchaeus for example. THANK YOU to REBECCA HANSEN for taking a lead role in our new Tween Closing program this year. The 6th grade students finished a special milestone ministry class on the Life and Times of Martin Luther, taught by JUDI STOKER. Students received a Luther mug and certificate for their 6-weeks of study, as well as received a copy of the Lutheran catechism in preparation for entering the Confirmation program next year.

The Confirmation students completed their end-of-the-year test on the New Testament and then visited with the Senior High class, where they were introduced to many of the students with whom they’ll be actively involved in the next year or two. Please encourage confirmed 8th graders to attend one or more of our Senior High events this summer.

Senior High students completed a bible study on significant numbers in the Bible and learned about an upcoming student-led prayer experience focused on building awareness about modern-day slavery, particularly around issues of human trafficking.

Thanks again to all teachers, shepherds, substitute teachers, special events people and those who worked behind the scenes to keep the Sunday School program thriving. As I have shared with parents, “Our Sunday School program is finished for the year, but God is not finished with us!” Please use the summer to worship God as a family here at Good Shepherd, or if you are on vacation, visit a church wherever you may be. Vacation Bible School is also an excellent Christian education opportunity for your child to learn more about Jesus and it’s fun to invite friends to attend, too!

What Does Faith Formation for Youth look like at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church?Minimize

Students learn about and experience faith in a variety of ways. At Good Shepherd, we encourage students to attend both Sunday School and worship with their parents regularly.

Our Sunday School hour is offered for students ages 2 through High School during September - May at 9:30am.

Preschool and Kindergarten students are grouped together is age-like classes to learn of God's love for them through age-appropriate Bible stories, songs, crafts, and guided playtime.

1st Grade - 3rd Grade students are grouped together by grade level and experience God's love for them through our Rotation model. In our Rotation model, students move among several dfferent classrooms over the course of a month to learn about the same Bible story through a variety of stations (or rotations). Monthly rotation stations include art, computers, drama, science, games and many others.

4th - 6th Grade students gather together to learn how to live out their faith 24/7. Students will experience both large-group and small-group relationships as they study one important Bible point each week and pick a Daily Challenge to help them apply their faith to their lives during the week.

7th & 8th Grade students study Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament as part of Good Shepherd's Confirmation Ministry.

Senior High (9th - 12th grade) students meet with an adult leader to strengthen relationships and deepen their faith  through discussion and small group activities around current issues related to teen life and the Bible. This class also functions as the weekly youth group meeting time for Senior High students at GSLC.

Cherub ChoirMinimize

The Cherub Choir is a choir for children in grades K through 3. The choir rehearses on Sunday mornings from 10:30a.m. - 11:15a.m., September through May. The choir sings for the 11:00a.m. traditional services, the Christmas Concert, the Christmas Eve Children's service and 5:00p.m. Easter Saturday service.

Mission ProjectsMinimize

Students in our Sunday School program have multiple opportunities to be Godly servants to others throughout the year. Each year, families of Sunday School students participate in Operation Christmas Child and the month of March is dedicated as mission month. Examples of mission projects are:

Heifer International

Pennies for Peace

Pigs for Haiti

"Serve one another in love." (Galatians 5:13)

Little LambsMinimize

The Little Lambs Sunday Music program provides supplementary reading and musical activities for Preschool and Kindergarten students each Sunday morning. Students learn the joy of music by the playing of introductory musical instruments and begin to commit bible verses to memory by associating movement with specific words.
