Good Shepherd Lutheran Church / Wednesday, July 14, 2021 / Categories: Publications, Daily Devotions Service to Others | Daily Devotion SERVICE Christian service is most often called “ministry”. In baptism we are all called to ministry, in other words we are called to serve others. During a baptism, the following words are spoken: “We are to … live among God’s faithful people; hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper; proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed; serve all people following the example of Jesus; and strive for justice and peace in all the earth.” (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, page 236). The basic concept for a mission trip is to help individuals live into their call to ministry. Mission trips often provide individuals with a new experience in which they can both be a witness of their faith to others whom they are serving and also witness to how God is working through others that are being served. One of the student participants, an in-coming junior in high-school, shared the following reflection about service during our Daily Devotional time. What do you enjoy most about serving others? Feeling accomplished in what I did and seeing the gratitude of the people I helped. What do you find challenging about serving others? Getting up early and working hard without pay can feel very difficult sometimes. What is one new thing that you have learned by serving others this week? One small task can have a huge impact on numerous other tasks. What is one gift that you bring for serving others? I think I am very determined to work hard so people can depend on me. If you could serve anyone/anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I’d like to serve in a third world county to be able to experience that lifestyle and to help people while also being grateful for what I have at home. In 1 Peter 4:9-10, we read, “9Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” Good Shepherd offers many ways to serve others, both inside and outside the church. What gift can you bring to help grow one of the ministry opportunities at Good Shepherd? God is merciful and His blessings were and are plentiful, if only we pray and ask.
