Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

Daily Devotion

Matthew 6:25-34

Jesus said, 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

I am finding one of the most challenging things about our current situation is that we don’t have an end date.  We can’t mark days off the calendar and see the end in sight.  I do trust that the end date is coming and life will eventually go back to normal, but right now we just don’t know when that will be.  I guess that’s why I find Jesus’ words here so comforting—do not worry about tomorrow, but focus on each day.  To imagine another month or more of staying at home seems overwhelming, but staying home “today” seems doable.  Worry is about anticipating things that may or may not happen in the future.  Jesus reminds us that he is with us in the here and now, and he is providing for us.  When we get to the future he will be there too.

Reflection exercise: write out your worries and then as you sit with God in prayer release them into God’s hands.  Trust that God hears your prayer, and can take on your burden of worry.

Thank you Heidi! I have been thinking about these words especially since the beginning of this. It's amazing what faith can do for us in times like these and hopefully it strengthens us more and we have deeper faith when it ends.

Excellent passage and words during these challenging times, thank you. Recall what my mother would always say, things have a way to work out have faith.
