Devotionals

Devotionals are short essays written by GSLC members and staff that explore the ways the Holy Spirit works within our every day lives.  There are several ways we invite you to use these devotionals:

  • Make them a part of a prayer practice - read a devotion and consider the ways that Christ has worked similarly in your life or works in unexpected ways.
  • Make them a part of a journaling practice - read a devotion and journal about what the Holy Spirit is stirring in you as you reflect on the essay.
  • Use them as a reminder that God works in all things, the bad and the good.

With over 400 available devotions, you can use these daily, weekly, or monthly.  It's up to you!  We just hope that by reading these inspiring stories provided by Good Shepherd's flock you are able to better see where Jesus is present in all things!  Thank you to all of our members that have provided devotionals throughout the past couple of years!

Daily Devotion

One of the victims of COVID-19 is singer/songer writer John Prine, who died on April 7 at 73 years of age.  That makes me sad.  I have been listening to a lot of Prine’s music lately, especially his last album Tree of Forgiveness, which released in 2018.  One of the songs on that album, Boundless Love, has captivated me, because it reminds me of the love Jesus was trying to teach us about. I can imagine the Prodigal Son, in the story that Jesus told, singing this song in response to what he experienced when he got home.   Heck, I could sing this song every day in response to how God welcomes me home, to boundless love, every day.

“But while the son was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion, the father ran and put his arms around the son and kissed him.”   Luke 15:20

Boundless Love  by John Prine
(Click below to listen)

Woke up this morning to a garbage truck
Looks like this old horseshoe's done run out of luck
If I came home, would you let me in?
Fry me some pork chops and forgive my sin?

Surround me with your boundless love
Confound me with your boundless love
I was drowning in the sea, lost as I could be
When you found me with your boundless love

Sometimes my old heart is like a washing machine
It bounces around 'til my soul comes clean
And when I'm clean and hung out to dry
I'm gonna make you laugh until you cry

Surround me with your boundless love
Confound me with your boundless love
I was drowning in the sea, lost as I could be
When you found me with your boundless love

If by chance I should find myself at risk
A-falling from this jagged cliff
I look below, and I look above
I'm surrounded by your boundless love

Surround me with your boundless love
Confound me with your boundless love
You dumbfound me with your boundless love
You surround me with your boundless love

In the end, John Prine died as we all will, surrounded by God’s boundless love…..

Trust deeply in that promise, friends.

Pastor Heidi

Thank you for this. I remember listening to John Prine with my uncle especially Everybody. We would sit and he would close his eyes and sing every word. We would just sit together with music and feel connected. God’s love connects us all and sometimes in quiet and unexpected ways. How is God surrounding you or connecting you to His boundless love today?

Did not know who John Prine was until listening to a CET broadcast commemorating his life. 2 weeks ago Did not realize how well know he was in the music world. His Boundless Love is a great message. and I greatly appreciated how you displayed the message so it could read while listening to him sing the lyrics.

I saw that John had passed. Sad indeed. I have listed to his stuff of and on over the years. Folk Music has lots of truth and many times lots of spiritual themes. Thanks for sharing.

I have always loved John Prine. His music has marked so many times in my life. And now it will mark quarantine of 2020 as well. Thanks for sharing these lovely lyrics today, Pastor Heidi.

We love "In spite of Ourselves" and love singing along. ;-) And Amen for the perspective that John is in that Boundless Love.
