Devotionals

Devotionals are short essays written by GSLC members and staff that explore the ways the Holy Spirit works within our every day lives.  There are several ways we invite you to use these devotionals:

  • Make them a part of a prayer practice - read a devotion and consider the ways that Christ has worked similarly in your life or works in unexpected ways.
  • Make them a part of a journaling practice - read a devotion and journal about what the Holy Spirit is stirring in you as you reflect on the essay.
  • Use them as a reminder that God works in all things, the bad and the good.

With over 400 available devotions, you can use these daily, weekly, or monthly.  It's up to you!  We just hope that by reading these inspiring stories provided by Good Shepherd's flock you are able to better see where Jesus is present in all things!  Thank you to all of our members that have provided devotionals throughout the past couple of years!

The Five Senses of Camp - Taste

Smores is the obvious taste of camp. Even when just my family goes camping, we make smores. And we always make smores during campfire at both Lutheridge and Camp Luther.

Coffee would be a close second taste of camp. There is always fresh coffee brewing somewhere at camp and I definitely follow the liberal camp policy that you can take your cup of coffee with you as you leave the dining hall, just a strong encouragement to return it before the end of the week. J

There are also other tastes that remind me of camp too, like Sweet Tea or Cheerwine, but what really reminds me of camp is the taste of a Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Dessert Bar. Seriously, this is the taste of camp for me. Why? Because I only ever eat it at camp. This is not a food item that I keep in my house and it’s not something that I normally come across at my local dairy bar. But at camp, I definitely enjoy a cold, sweet treat at the end of the day, especially if the kids are playing one last game of Gaga Ball and there is a beautiful sunset to watch too!

When I think about food that reminds me of camp, I always come back to Psalm 34:8.

8 O taste and see that the Lord is good;
   happy are those who take refuge in him.

We say these exact same words during Communion – “taste and see” and I think these words are the perfect invitation for attending camp. A week at camp offers you an opportunity to “taste and see” what being surrounded by a caring, Christian community 24/7 looks, feels, smells, tastes, and sounds like. Camp offers each of us a chance to “taste and see” Jesus in a whole new way and in a whole new place. And you don’t have to like every single part of the camp experience (just like not everyone has to like Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Dessert Bars), but yet camp has something to offer everyone. So, come “taste and see” what camp has to offer you in Summer 2021. I’ll be there, next to the Snack Bar, enjoying my Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Dessert Bar.
