Daily Devotions

Hello Good Shepherd!

We are going to be working on various ways to stay connected to you all during this unusual time.  One way will be through this (nearly) Daily Devotional to your inbox, and copied here where you have the opportunity to contribute comments and responses to the reflection questions.

Another is through a weekend message, like Pastor Alex did this past weekend. We are continually talking as a staff as to the best ways to keep in contact and support you all in the midst of these days.

Additionally, the 2020 Lenten Devotional which was written by our members, is available here on the website, just follow this link to the Publications page.

Peace,

Pastor Heidi Johns

Daily Devotion

March 17, 2020, Tuesday

Do you remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer was receiving calls for the automated movie theater operator and tried to fill the role? I can feel this way when seeking God’s direction. Why don’t you just tell me what you want me to do?!

When it comes to decisions, I find that when I am intentional about asking for God’s guidance, then noticing and trusting what comes next, I’m able to step forward with more confidence and less fear. A few examples:

In college, I asked God’s help when struggling to choose my major. I received a very timely answer, through the wisdom of a graduating senior.

I was considering seeking a new role at work. God told me to stay put! (for now), by drawing my attention to an email devotional that exactly matched Wednesday, March 18 the lyrics of a song concurrently playing.

Saying “yes” to the subtle nudge in my heart, to come and see the work God is doing in Haiti, wasn’t easy or fast. One day I took to my journal: “I’m afraid.” “Why?” “Because I am.” “I will catch you.” OK. I would go, and trust in God. Decisions can be hard. Consider asking for God’s guidance, then pay attention and trust in the answer. You never know what will happen!

Deuteronomy 31: 8
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Reflection Questions:

  • When are times in your life when you have been desperate to hear from God?  Did you have a sense that God answered you or provided direction?

  • In what ways are you longing to hear from God in these strange and uncertain days?  How might God’s answer be revealed to you?

  • How does the Scripture for today strike you?  Can you trust God’s word, “Do not be afraid?”

(If you wish, you may comment below to share your reflections with others from Good Shepherd.)

After working with you in Manna, I can say for sure that God is speaking to you. I know that you are listening and following God's guidance. In Jeremiah 29: 11, God said, "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not to harm, to give you a future with hope."

Keep listening!
