Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

Daily Devotion

by Kellie Grabenbauer

My family’s best memories of GSLC are rooted in the third week of June. For more than a decade, I loaded up the kids, popped in a VBS CD, and we gathered in a sanctuary buzzing with energy. There’s nothing like the anticipation and excitement on Monday morning or the exhaustion and satisfaction of Friday at noon. It’s a great blessing that VBS serves the kids from the nursery school and the community, along with our youngest GSLCers.

As a longtime volunteer, it’s an annual revitalization of my own faith. It’s a reminder of the most basic tenets of what I believe and how to live it the other 51 weeks of the year. The songs filled my heart and my van. Their powerful lyrics still trickle into my brain when I need them most.

Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Vacation Bible School.

Dive deep, deep into God’s word, we’re learning to live in the water.

My personal relationship with God begins in the promise of baptism. It’s strengthened through reading and studying His word. Five decades later, I’m still learning how to translate those words into daily practice.

I will not be afraid, though trouble’s out there, night and day.
I will not be swamped with fear, since God is always, always, always, yeah, I know he’s always here. (Crocodile Dock)

It’s a scary world out there. There have been many times when fear has been a constant companion. Though the details might be different in your life, we all face fear as an adversary. What comforted me through the darkness was the peace He brought; maybe through a word from a friend, the sunrise of a new day, or in moments of prayer.

Helping out a neighbor and lending a hand, building up a sister or brother
All the world around is God’s big backyard and there’s plenty of room when we’re loving each other. (God’s Big Backyard)

My family loves the emphasis that GSLC places on living out faith through service. We’ve packed meals at Hands Against Hunger, served families at the Ronald McDonald House, and painted hallways during God’s Work, Our Hands weekends, just to name a few. When my husband was overseas, we were surrounded by your generosity. It’s been a blessing for my kids to experience God’s love in action. We are all part of God’s creation and we all have a calling to care for this world and the people in it.

I have a Maker. He formed my heart. Before even time began, my life was in His hands. He knows my name, He knows my every thought.
He sees each tear that falls, and hears me when I call. (Pandamania)

This theme came at a particularly rough patch when we lived out of state. It was such a needed and powerful reassurance. I am treasured. I am loved. He grieves with me. He rejoices with me. He has written my name on the palm of His hand. Wow.

It’s almost June and I’m thrilled that Crocodile Dock is back for a new generation. I hope it’s messages stay with you for a lifetime. Leave a comment with YOUR favorite VBS memory.
