Daily Devotions

Welcome to Good Shepherd’s Daily Devotions Page!

As we journey together for these 40 days of Lent may these daily devotions serve as Spiritual nourishment.  These devotions have been written by YOU, the members of Good Shepherd, may they serve to inspire, encourage and comfort us, even as they deepen our “knowing” of each other as siblings in this family of faith.  Thank you to all of our authors.  Your willingness to share your insights, joys and struggles around faith, with conviction and vulnerability, is a blessing as we all seek to grow closer to God.

Daily Devotion

by Heidi M. Johnson

Do you feel overwhelmed by what’s going on in the world?  I know I do.  We can choose to get depressed and give up OR make a difference for at least one person!  We can sit alone in our homes and bemoan the state of everything (which I have also done) OR we can think positive thoughts and pray for inspiration to help others.  When you help others, you are no longer focused on yourself and your problems.  Check on an elderly neighbor, shovel the snow off sidewalks without being asked, pay for the car behind you in the fast food lane, call to check in on family and friends on a regular basis (maybe they are feeling overwhelmed too), just do it!

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in everyone.”

Captain Tom Moore, the 99-yr-old United Kingdom man who pledged to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise money for the “heroes” at Britain’s National Health Service, achieved his goal and so much more.  Not only did he raise over $40 million in donations from around the world, but he showed that one person can make a difference--even at the ripe old age of 99!

Dr. Deneese L Jones (associate professor at U.K.) wrote a devotional reading titled “Faith for Positive Change” which I found in my Women’s Devotional Bible 2.  She talked about “having this kind of faith means being active, not sitting back bemoaning life and waiting for change.  It means loving and believing in ourselves and using the transforming power of God’s Holy Spirit to move our lives forward.”

To finish, I’ll share one of my favorite stories:  The Starfish Story
(Original Story by: Loren Eisley)

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.  Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”  The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”  After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.

Then, smiling at the man, he said…..“I made a difference for that one.”

Thanks Heidi. We all need to be reminded of the little things we can do to make a difference. I’ve seen the starfish story before but was happy to read it again. It’s very powerful.

Heidi, the Starfish Story is one of my favorites, too! I liked all of your examples of people finding ways to do what they can to make a difference. Thank you!
