Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

Daily Devotion

by Carla Jowanovitz

When this pandemic started, I grossly underestimated its impact.  I never imagined it would last this long or take so many lives.  Is there an aspect of life it has not touched?  It has changed our jobs and income; activities, attitudes and moods; holiday celebrations and family gatherings; worship, school and education; healthcare –I could go on.  It is safe to say that everyone has been changed somehow by a virus we cannot even see.  I haven’t seen God either, but I have felt him ever so strongly this past year.  I have felt his love and compassion through my church: Good Shepherd has been my lifeline.  The pastors and staff have worked tirelessly to adapt the way we do church so we would still be connected during the pandemic.  Through devotions, zoom Bible study, innovative worship and outreach my church has been a tremendous support and source of encouragement.  I am closer to God than I have ever been in my life.

The devotions, written by a diverse group of people, have been educational, spiritual and full of hope.  The ones written by members have been among my favorites.  I have been connected and inspired through book studies and my Lenten group from 2020, which has continued to meet weekly.  We share our weekly activities and prayer requests.  We encourage, affirm and lift each other up.  I have enjoyed outdoor worship in the church parking lot, especially on Easter morning.

It is so easy to take what we have for granted:  I am thankful for scientific discoveries.  I am grateful my family has stayed healthy and that we are now all vaccinated against COVID-19.  I feel privileged to participate in the vaccination efforts as a pharmacist vaccinator.  I have a new appreciation for God’s creation and I am so blessed to be part of the Good Shepherd community.

As a joyful act of spiritual transformation, stewardship calls me to carefully and responsibly take care of what God has entrusted to my care.  Stewardship is using God’s gifts for his glory.  With all that I have received from GSLC, I want to give back and invest in Good Shepherd, with my time, talent and treasure.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

How has God blessed you during this pandemic?
