Daily Devotions

Welcome to Good Shepherd’s Daily Devotions Page!

Welcome to the Season of Advent.  This is a season when we read from the Apocalyptic or End Times writings in Scripture.  Jesus encourages us to stay awake and watch for his coming.  John the Baptist appears, calling for a way to be made in the wilderness, ready for the Messiah to come.  The color of the Season is blue, like the pre-dawn color of the sky, full of hope and expectation that a new day is coming.

Advent is a season for preparing, which is what we will be doing through these daily devotions, which were written by Pastor Heidi Johns.  As we travel these four weeks leading to Christmas we will be preparing our hands, homes and hearts for the coming of Christ.

Daily Devotion

Our devotions written by Good Shepherd members will resume next week, but this week our daily devotions will take a different approach as we focus on Hunger in conjunction with our NEEDS food drive.  Each day we will watch a short video from ELCA World Hunger that will help us gain a better understanding of the extend of poverty in our world, and ways that the ELCA is trying to improve the lives of those trapped in poverty.

Today’s video takes us to an East Boston Soup Kitchen housed in a Lutheran Church.  The ministry focuses help on single males, often addicts, who tend to be left out of other support programs.   You can watch the video here, and then reflect on the questions below:  Video Link

In the video one of the leaders says that in addition to giving a plate of food, they also give love, community and family. Why do you think it is important to have a philosophy of treating the “whole person” and not just physical hunger?

Can you think of a Bible story where Jesus restored people who wholeness rather than just treating a physical need—read the story of the 10 Lepers in Luke 17—what does it mean when Jesus says, “your faith has healed you?”

One of the leaders says, “I’m not better than the person I’m giving this plate of food to.”  What role does humility play in sharing God’s love?
