The Edge House campus ministry is like the inn in on the road to Jericho in the story of the Good Samaritan: it’s the place where the Samaritan takes the injured man for healing, it’s a place of storytelling for all the people who stay there while travelling, and it’s a place of transition, people constantly coming and going. Healing, storytelling, transition. Let me tell you a story.

I’ve been trying to make a connection to the UC Marching Band for a couple of years now. I’ve got a good relationship with the director, Abi goes and sells Girl Scout cookies to the hungry college students in January, and I occasionally visit the band practices. Because of Covid, Matthew and I have moved our work to the outside of the Edge House to our newly redecorated front porch and front patio under an enormous tent where we can chat with passers-by. It turns out, the current residents of the apartment building next door are all marching band members! We say hello every day as they pass and talk a little about their playing and their classes. The other day, student Leah made them a couple dozen snickerdoodles to say “welcome back” from the Edge House. Who knows where this will go, but for the moment, we’re thrilled with the visibility and the extra welcome we can offer our neighbors.

Try telling someone in your household or a neighbor or just your ownself a story about something that’s happened because of Covid that gives you hope. It doesn’t mean everything is peachy, mind you, only that alongside the things we struggle with, that there is also blessing.
