Holy Connections

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us… v.78

When I was in seminary, attending chapel during the week was a spiritual practice of mine. Reflecting on these services I can still hear the bubbling of the font, can picture the light coming through the stained glass windows, and taste the elements blessed by my professors.

At chapel congregational and liturgical singing was most meaningful to me. It felt like home to hold the ELW and sing hymns and liturgy that I had sung and heard since I was a child. I can distinctly remember the voice of one of my classmates signing The Benedictus one morning, a gospel canticle taken directly from today’s reading.

Scripture, like hymnody and liturgy, connects us not only to God but to others throughout history and around the world. It connects me to Zechariah, to my parents worshiping in their church, and that small rural church where I was baptized. These treasures of the church make holy connections across time, space, race, and gender.

God of all, we give you thanks for the gifts of scripture, hymnody, and liturgy. In the name of the Christ. Amen.
