I was looking forward to being an occupational therapist, but I didn’t see why I needed to take that required course. I was never going to be a manager. I just wasn’t that type of person. What I didn’t understand then is that leadership isn’t just a career decision; it’s a part of life, community, and service. Years later, I was asked to be a leader in the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) program that was starting up at Good Shepherd. I replied that I really wasn’t a leader. Someone else would do a better job. Nevertheless, I was assured that the team would help me. With more than a small amount of trepidation, I agreed to do it. Especially at the beginning, I had a lot to learn. I wasn’t a natural leader. I didn’t know how to keep a group of people on task, or to keep a meeting moving forward. With time and help from our mentors, I improved. Being in MOPS leadership ended up being a very positive experience. I felt privileged to be involved so tightly in an organization that had come to mean so much to me. Since then, I have served in various leadership roles at Good Shepherd, such as in the Renewal program, Sunday School, women’s retreats, and Walk, Talk and Pray. I wouldn’t say that leading is a gift of mine, but I can do it – especially when it is something that I am passionate about. I often remember a phrase that I heard years ago: “God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.” Thankfully, it’s true. Sometimes God presents us with service opportunities that are a natural fit. They make use of our gifts and experiences and we walk into them easily. Other times, it takes a little more work. Perhaps we have to learn a new skill, or overcome a fear. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we aren’t right for the job.
