Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

How many times Can God’s Presence Be Felt in a Twelve Hour Period?

Our day began on a festive weekend in Cincinnati when the fireworks display was to occur and we were invited to an anniversary celebration which was held on an upper floor of the hotel overlooking the Ohio river.  John and I had agreed that he and Mary would drive to the occasion. (Presence number 1).

Shortly after dinner, Anne became seriously ill and thought maybe she was having a heart attack.  She was in excruciating pain.  911 was called and the Covington EMS people arrived in short order.  I was asked which hospital I wanted her to go to and I said “Christ”.  I was told the bridges were closed so they took her to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, Kentucky.  The doctors on call determined she had a collapsed lung but knew there was more serious damage and said they were transporting her to U.C Medical where Dr. Starnes would be waiting for her.  (Presence number 2).

Dr. Starnes happened to be on “call” that night and was the head of the department of Thoracic surgery at U.C. which was indeed a blessing. ( Presence number 3)

Anne had blown out the sides of her esophagus when she was sick.  This was a life-threatening- occurrence  and required a true specialist, which Dr Starnes was.  The resulting operation took five hours and Anne was out of the hospital in twelve days, just in time to attend our granddaughters’ wedding.  (Presence number 4).

We will never forget that day when God had his hands so firmly placed on our shoulders and guided the Doctors at St. Elizabeth Hospital to recognize that the problem was greater than they could handle and to have Dr. Starnes on call to perform the operation.

In all of this confusion, I did not have to worry about a car and John and Mary accompanied me to St. Elizabeth and then drove me to U.C.  What a Godsend it was to have them available and with me during these trying times. (Presence number 5).

Joshua Chapter 1 vs.9:”Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

I am so thankful for God's presence throughout Anne's illness, and for all of the times that He intervenes to give us exactly what we need!

Oh, Buzz, I've been totally unaware of this crisis in your life, involving such a beloved woman, wife and mother. You've written powerfully of that period, and I can feel God's presence in your words and heart. I'm so grateful for them all.
