Daily Devotion

Dianne Gebhardt-French

Mark 10:16 (NIV) “And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.”

“Grandma, do you remember church?” She tilted her 4-year-old head to the left and asked in her precise way of testing shared memories – a technique developed over seven months of separation forced by COVID. The 2,400 miles between us disappeared.

“You remember? The singing, the music, and being quiet when the woman is talking…It is across the street from my music school,” she said.

Describing the church we attend with her in San Jose, this tiny wonder started a conversation that left both of us assured that God is in her heart and mine.

Of course, she doesn’t remember her baptism at Good Shepherd but she has some recall of celebrating there last Christmas. Papa held her so she could see. And, Uncle Martin was there. It’s the foundation of time together that brings together the pieces of faith.

She started the conversation and, just as quickly, moved on to giraffes and Play-Doh. But, she accepted my explanation that what she calls “the sickness” doesn’t stop God’s love, only the chance to be together in a building. For now. We can still sing, pray, and read about Jesus. In the sharing, we are together.
