Good Shepherd Lutheran Church / Friday, September 25, 2020 / Categories: Publications, Daily Devotions Daily Devotion Heidi Johnson One of my favorite quotes in “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” I had planned to keep teaching until 2023. Things happened and I retired in June 2020. My daughter Jillian had planned to work in a nursing home this summer. COVID19 happened and she has been staying at home. We had planned to travel to China (her birth country) this year as a HS graduation gift. That isn’t happening anytime soon. “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 I read Pastor Alex’s Devotion about how the disciples must have felt after Jesus had died and was inspired to write a song. This is unusual; I haven’t written many songs. But my heart cried out with these words: REFRAIN Now what? Now what? Everything is different. What shall we do? Now what? Now what? Everything is different. We don’t have a clue. “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:12-13 Change is hard, especially when it is thrust upon you unexpectedly. Feeling like you have lost all control over your life and trying to figure out what will happen next. It’s all too much! Help me, God. Then I remembered the words to this hymn: What a friend we have in Jesus All our sins and griefs to bear And what a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer Oh, what peace we often forfeit Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. As C.S. Lewis put it: “Prayer doesn’t change God, it changes me.” Take time today to carry everything to God in prayer—it really makes a difference.
