Daily Devotion

Lena Schwarz

I start my day like many others, checking and replying to my email, completing my morning chores, scanning my social media, and catching up on the news.  This month, my milestone birthday took me back in time and I realized how the world has changed so much.  It’s crazy that as we moved from landline to mobile phone, you can be reached anytime, anywhere, and you can reach out to anyone, anywhere in many ways, as well.

At times, I feel that this instantaneous, accessible world we live in can make us somewhat insensitive.  It is unbelievable how quickly we can make our inner-voice public today, unintentionally being viewed or interpreted based on a few quick words or emojis – no tone, no body language, no discussion, no context.  I believe that most people naturally are more reserved or humble in their expressions when interacting directly with another person than when communicating virtually.

There are times I read what’s written and think it may have been better if they communicated in-person, by phone or FaceTime/Skype/Zoom than to simply broadcast.  Maybe we need to reflect about what we really want to say or express and think twice before sending or posting – whom we are communicating with and how will they receive the message or post – or just go direct, instead of broadcast.

The Bible is probably the oldest, largest broadcast.  What was it those writers, so many years ago, did so well?  And, what can we learn from how they communicated?

Matthew 15:11:  “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”

Lena, you make really good points about communication. Your devotional also causes me to reflect and realize that the older I get, the more relevant the Bible becomes to my life.
