Daily Devotions

We are thrilled to once again be sharing a daily devotion with you for the season of Advent. These inspiring devotions have been written by YOU the members of Good Shepherd.  A sincere “thank you” to everyone who opened their hearts to share a small piece of their faith journey with us.   As we journey toward Bethlehem in this season, take time each day to walk with God and experience the stirrings of the deep love that took on flesh to walk with us.

During the four week Advent season, each Wednesday our devotion will be a video reflection by Dr. Kevin Seal, Director of Worship and Music at Good Shepherd, as he shares a teaching about the Words and Music of Advent.

Each new day’s devotion will go live directly on our webpage, goodshepherd.com at 6am, (look under the worship tab at the top right of the front page) or you can follow the link that will be sent out later each morning in an email from Good Shepherd.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

Daily Devotion

by Cathy Heppler

What is your favorite part of the worship services at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church?  My favorite part is the music.  I grew up appreciating music while playing in the concert band and orchestra in school starting in fifth grade, performing in the ensemble for high school musicals, marching and playing for parades and band competitions, and participating in the 4-H Band in my local central Ohio community.

Although I haven’t played an instrument for many years and I don’t sing well, music continues to play an important role in my life.  Every day when I get up in the morning, I switch on music before I jump in the shower and reluctantly turn it off to log on to Zoom calls while working from home.  Our sons laugh at me when I crank up the volume during a favorite song and dance around the kitchen.  I am normally the primary driver on family road trips as the three boys (hubby and kids) watch movies or listen to audio books in the car, and I enjoy music on the radio.  One of my favorite pastimes is attending Broadway shows with a friend who shares my interest in theater and musicals.

So many songs are a major focal point in life events, including the classical music played during the birth of our son, songs that inspire our favorite teams and fans at sporting events, and musical memories shared at baptism, first communion, confirmation, prom, graduation, weddings and funerals.  I simply love music — nearly all kinds of music — and the music at GSLC always leaves me feeling a more meaningful connection to God.  I’m amazed at the variety of music and musicians at GSLC, the significance of the songs to each liturgy, and the passion of the talented performers.  I appreciate the way the music lifts my spirit when I’m feeling down from a challenging week of struggling to balance home-life and work.

Most memorable for me is singing “Silent Night” in the candlelight during the Christmas Eve service with my family, which brings tears to my eyes and captures the spirit and essence of Christmas.  I’m looking forward to being back in church together with a full congregation, and having Pastor Alice sing a new verse for us to learn by repeating after her or Ken Holdt encouraging us to join in and “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”!

“As long as we live, there is never enough singing.” - Martin Luther
