Devotionals

Devotionals are short essays written by GSLC members and staff that explore the ways the Holy Spirit works within our every day lives.  There are several ways we invite you to use these devotionals:

  • Make them a part of a prayer practice - read a devotion and consider the ways that Christ has worked similarly in your life or works in unexpected ways.
  • Make them a part of a journaling practice - read a devotion and journal about what the Holy Spirit is stirring in you as you reflect on the essay.
  • Use them as a reminder that God works in all things, the bad and the good.

With over 400 available devotions, you can use these daily, weekly, or monthly.  It's up to you!  We just hope that by reading these inspiring stories provided by Good Shepherd's flock you are able to better see where Jesus is present in all things!  Thank you to all of our members that have provided devotionals throughout the past couple of years!

Romans 1:17 For in the Gospel the righteousness of God is revealed-a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “the righteous will live by faith”.

There is peace found in reading the scriptures.  Have Peter and I always been Bible readers…yes…more or less.  Often times, I fear “less” may have been the more appropriate characterization of our situation.  We have always considered ourselves committed Christians and good students of the Bible, yet taking that time to explore the scriptures each and every day was frequently  eclipsed by the demands of the day…whether they were career/job demands, keeping the home front going demands, or even the seemingly sacrosanct demands of caring for the family.  We failed to read the scriptures every day even though doing so brings so much.

The pandemic has changed our lives…negatively in so many temporal ways…but positively in the most important of all ways…getting closer to our Savior through intentional and focused reading…everyday…of the scriptures.  One is almost ashamed to say it took the current situation of being locked away from life as we have known it, but how we got to where we are…a daily dive into the Scriptures is unimportant.  What is key is that we are in a different place than we were just half a year ago.  Reading/striving to understand even the most difficult passages can be part of a whole new dimension to life.  Scriptures speak to you and ultimately become a part of you.

We started with the gospels and then moved to Paul’s Epistles and more recently switched to the Psalms.  After a while, we will turn to some of the prophets and seek out their inspiration and sense of the holiness of the Lord…and then, we will no doubt go back again to the Gospels and dig even deeper as the Lord aids our efforts.

Read with a keen desire to understand and internalize the Kingdom, the scriptures provide answers for any problem or need…they are a guidebook and a best direction setter.  We are clearer on that point than we have ever been and pray that post pandemic we will maintain this deeper understanding of what is a true priority for our lives and seek the scriptures on a daily basis.

Isaiah 48:17   This is what the Lord says-your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:  “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”
