A Child's Hope

Rich, Chance and Jake Freshwater

This story of giving is from Rich, Chance and Jake Freshwater

Chance, Jake and I were blessed with an envelope containing a $100 check. The boys were pretty excited by this challenge and gave lots of thought to the best way to put God’s grace to work. We tossed around thoughts about helping a homeless person(s), supporting a foster care agency, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and in the end the boys selected a charity they had spent time with recently.

On the Saturday prior to receiving this challenge, the entire family volunteered for A Child’s Hope International. During the few hours of volunteering (along with others from GSLC) 115,000 nutritional bags of food were made. The bags contained rice, soy, a supplement and dehydrated veggies. This particular lot was slated for shipping to Nicaragua to feed kids that may not get a daily meal. While the kids weren’t thrilled with the actual work, they felt great about giving back. Enough so that they chose to send the GSLC check to this organization so it could be used to prepare food bags to feed a child for over a year.

I challenged the boys that if this was to be our family choice that we’d need to volunteer to pack food bags again...and they wholeheartedly agreed. Because the boys felt so excited by this cause...I told them I’d match the GSLC check and in total we sent off $200. This challenge was a great win for all. The charity now has money to feed two children for over a year or to bag 800 meals for many children. The boys got to feel excited around giving back and discerning the best way to put the money to work that made them feel good. And dad got to feel super proud of his sons being so diligent and thoughtful in the process.

So now we will plan another volunteer opportunity with A Child’s Hope International and we invite all GSLC congregants to join us. Thanks GSLC for this amazing challenge and opportunity!! We hope we’ve proudly carried Gods grace forward!

What a wonderful story! I love that the boys were excited to participate and help others. It seems that we all learn so much through serving with our own hands- and in this case, A Child's Hope International is receiving God's grace through YOUR hands- both in action and financial support!

Thank you for honoring your father with this gift to Habitat. 13 homes in his era is quite an accomplishment, and to think of the generations he impacted with his volunteerism is priceless.

I have passed that corner several times in the last month. The man is no longer standing there. It is wrong to extrapolate beyond the data, but…

Dianne Gebhardt French:

Lisa, this is a wonderful story about family, connection, and community. Thank you for sharing.

Tracey Long:

Well timing they say is everything- and it seems that the need, your skills and this gift were certainly in God's plan. Prayers of blessing on your hands as you take your skills where they are needed to help those effected by Dorian.

Tracey Long:

What more can I say- your letter was beautiful! Great to hear that Pastor McNickels and the House of Praise so exemplify the intent of the gift that your recipient was an obvious choice. Blessings to their ministry!

Tracey Long:

Addiction has trapped far too many and taken away the abundant life God intends for them- your gift will help bring HIS light to those who are seeking it. May your gift be proof through a time of struggle that God is always there to help.
