Good Shepherd Film Discussion Series

Expand your appreciation of film through great discussion!

This year’s theme: Stranger Than Fiction. All of the films are worthy of discussion, to be sure. At the same time, there is something unusual about these movies. They are sometimes a bit off the beaten track. They may be a bit eccentric......they may seem a bit strange.....at times, they may even be more than a little......weird......in a good way......

This month’s film: American Fiction (2023)

Dr. Thelonious “Monk” Ellison is an African American college professor and a distinguished author whose books have never become popular. He despairs of other black authors who use stereotypical images of his people to write commercially successful novels. Monk decides to write his own satire of the blaxploitation novel using the pen name of Stagger R. Lee. Quicker than you can say Super Fly, the book takes the country by storm, particularly with the white folks! They want to meet the author who tells it like it is! What is poor Monk to do? A wonderful and outlandish comedy, mixed in with a touching family drama, based on the novel by Percival Everett.
