This month’s film: Places in the Heart (1984)

Our final film in this series returns us to Texas, where we meet Edna Spalding, the wife of the town’s sheriff. A crazy accident ends the life of her husband on a Sunday afternoon; Edna must now find a way to survive on her own, raising their young children by herself.  She decides to plant cotton on their property, even though she doesn’t know a thing about farming. Can she do it? Sally Field, in an Oscar-winning role, leads an impressive cast that includes Lindsay Crouse, Ed Harris, Danny Glover and John Malkovich, under the fine direction of Robert Benton.
